A Free Fire nickname can have up to 12 characters, a PUBG Mobile or BGMI name 14, a TikTok or Instagram name 30, a WhatsApp profile name 25 and a WhatsApp group name 100. Usernames (your @handle) follow separate, stricter rules. Every stylish symbol and space counts as at least one character.
This guide puts every name limit in one place. It also explains why a fancy name can be “too long” when it looks short, and links to a free tool for each app that counts the characters before you paste. All limits were last checked in October 2026.
Quick tip: start from a short base name of 4 to 7 letters. That leaves room for a frame or a symbol in every app, even Free Fire.
All name character limits in one table
The table shows the name people see (display name), the @username where an app has one, and how often you can change it.
| App or game | Name limit | Username / handle | How often you can change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Fire | 3 to 12 characters | No handle (you get a numeric player ID) | Any time with diamonds or a Name Change Card |
| PUBG Mobile and BGMI | 14 characters | No handle | Any time with a Rename Card |
| TikTok | 30 characters | Up to 24: letters, numbers, _ and . | Name every 7 days, username every 30 days |
| 30 characters | Up to 30: letters, numbers, _ and . | Name twice in 14 days | |
| No single published number; it must look like a real name | Optional username | Profile name once every 60 days | |
| 25 (profile name), 100 (group name) | 3 to 35 for the new username | Any time |
Bios have their own limits: 150 characters on Instagram, 80 on TikTok and 101 for the Facebook intro. A WhatsApp group description can be up to 2,048 characters.
Why a short stylish name can still be too long
Apps count characters, not how wide a name looks. Every frame, symbol, space and invisible letter takes one slot, and some fancy fonts take two.
- Frames count on both sides. A name like 『ALI』 looks like three letters but uses five characters.
- Small caps are safe. Letters such as ꜱʜᴀᴅᴏᴡ count as one character each and show on almost every phone.
- Script and bold fonts can count double. Letters like 𝓐𝓵𝓲 come from a special Unicode block. Some games count each one as two characters, or show them as empty boxes. Our tools mark these styles as TEST FIRST.
- Underline and strike styles add a mark per letter. An underlined five-letter name can use ten characters.
- Games often block normal spaces. Free Fire and PUBG players use the invisible blank ㅤ instead, and it still counts as one character.
Free Fire name limit: 12 characters
A Free Fire nickname must be 3 to 12 characters long, symbols included. At the time of writing a rename costs 390 diamonds or one Name Change Card. The game shows the price before you confirm, and the diamonds are spent the moment you do.
Twelve is the tightest limit on this list, so plan the frame first. A two-symbol frame such as 亗 on one side leaves ten characters for your name. The Free Fire name style generator shows every style’s length out of 12 and flags fonts that some phones cannot display. For clan names, the Free Fire guild name generator builds tag-and-name combinations inside the same 12-character box.
PUBG Mobile and BGMI name limit: 14 characters
PUBG Mobile and BGMI allow names of up to 14 characters, and every change uses a Rename Card. Clan tags, symbols and invisible blanks all count toward the 14.
A clan tag plus a separator often takes four or five characters, so keep the player name short. The PUBG name style generator joins your clan tag and name with a separator such as ×͜× or 亗, puts the tag before or after the name, and warns you before the name goes over 14.
TikTok name and username limits
A TikTok name can be up to 30 characters and can use any font or symbol. The @username can be up to 24 characters of letters, numbers, underscores and periods. You can change the name once every 7 days and the username once every 30 days.
Keep the decoration in the name and the username plain. The TikTok name style tool makes aesthetic names, @handles that pass the format rules, and short bio lines in six vibes.
Instagram name and username limits
Instagram allows 30 characters for the name and 30 for the username. The username only takes letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and the name can be changed twice within 14 days.
The name is also searchable, so a keyword like “art” or “travel” next to your name helps people find you. The Instagram name style tool gives name fonts, @username ideas checked against those rules, and 150-character bio lines.
Facebook name rules
Facebook does not publish a single character limit for profile names, but it does set name standards. Names cannot include symbols, numbers, unusual capitals, repeated characters or letters from more than one language, and you can change the name once every 60 days.
That is why stylish fonts belong in a Messenger nickname or your bio, not in the profile name. The Facebook name checker tests your real name against these rules, fixes common problems, and makes profile-safe versions with accented letters.
WhatsApp name and group name limits
A WhatsApp profile name can have 25 characters and a group name 100. WhatsApp raised the group name limit from 25 to 100 characters and the group description limit from 512 to 2,048.
The new WhatsApp username takes 3 to 35 lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. The WhatsApp group name maker gives 300+ group names in 12 categories, ready group descriptions and profile name styles.
How to make a stylish name that fits
- Start short. Pick a base name of 4 to 7 letters.
- Add one decoration. One frame or one symbol usually looks cleaner than three.
- Check the counter. Use the tool for your app, since every limit is different.
- Test fancy fonts. Paste the name into a note on your phone first. If you see empty boxes, pick a small caps or plain style.
- Keep a plain backup. If the app rejects the stylish version, you can still save a clean name.
